Writing about my Rational Arguement
In my writing class we were assigned to write a rational argument essay about anything we wanted. The only requirements was that it had to be four pages long, had to have four sources of evidence (2 from scholarly sources), and in MLA format.
Pretty obviously the first step in the process was finding a topic, but nothing was coming to mind that was controversial that I felt too strongly about. So I did what anyone would do when looking for answers, I used google to help me with ideas. I probably should have been more creative myself but I ended up choosing the topic "Do video games cause real life violence?"
I decided to write my essay on the position that they do not cause real life violence. I chose this because I grew up playing all kinds of video games myself, including shooter games. I am not a violent person but I still had fun playing those games, it was more of a way to relax instead of letting out aggression. When choosing my position I didn't take only myself into account, I thought about my friends and the people I know as well so I've seen first hand that they don't.
One of the struggles I had with this topic is finding good sources. Just because it is difficult to run studies that disproves that video games cause real life violence. The most convincing source I found actually had a data chart that had a direct correlation between video game popularity rising and violence between kids decreasing. I think this source actually conveys my argument a lot, it had just been difficult to find other sources.
